Oksana Badrak by Andee Eve Husney

Ob_macaque_medium_2

Oksana Badrak is an multi-talented artist who easily floats between the titles; illustrator, designer and fine artist, seamlessly combing superb draftsmanship with computer generated elements to create fantastic worlds that manage to defy the label “fantasy art” or at least give it a new spin. Badrak’s list of commercial clients include: Entertainment Weekly, Playboy and Nickelodean to name a few and she currently has a exhibition up at Black Maria Gallery in Atwater Village.

Recently I was invited to the studio of artist Oksana Badrak in Mount Washington. On seeing the work, I am immediately captivated by a large piece she has just had framed for the show. Badrak’s style and approach are unique, as is her take on her subject matter.

Aaron Rose Interview on Abla

Swervelogo

I first got wind the Swerve, a three-day festival of film screenings, music, art and related activities, about a month ago when I noticed the postcards in the neighborhood shops. The point of view and style of the collateral had sense of familiarity. Then I noticed the extremely impressive visual art lineup and the fact that there was finally an event on the eastside that reflected the creative spirit of the community and I got excited. Add to that the fact someone is finally using the entire Barnsdall facility to its potential and, well, it would be a stretch to say I went into convulsions but a friend did ask about the foam coming out of the corners of my mouth.

How did this event suddenly...

Try out a DASH of Silver Lake

1332481562_7bfc54bec4

On Saturday, September 29th, Silver Lake will host the first trial run of the proposed DASH (bus shuttle) line running through the neighborhood. Coordinated with the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council elections and the breaking of ground for the Silver Lake Library (a LEED Gold structure), the trial run of the DASH route will give Silver Lake residents a glimpse of what a neighborhood connector could do.

Survey input and on-the-ground interviews helped to shape the proposed route, which runs north from near the 101 along Silver Lake Blvd., around the reservoir and back down Hyperion connecting shopping areas, residential areas, and parks in the community. Can a DASH line connect our neighborhoods to major transportation corridors and get Silver Lake out of its cars? We'll start to find out later this month. Save the date to jump on board!
